McCain at the Al Smith Dinner

This was John McCain’s best moment throughout the whole campaign. Unfortunately, no one was watching. Perhaps that’s why we got to see some candor, as the Real McCain got behind a podium for the first time in many months. Like many, I have been turned off by the campaign he’s been running, but I also understand where he’s coming from, and harbor a little bit of sympathy for the man. Given his history with Bush and the GOP, his bid for the White House was backed into a corner from the start.
And it’s been tough for him. I think McCain fully aware of what he’s had to compromise in order to be the Republican front runner, and that has resulted in a lot of the flared nostrils, rash decisions, and harsh rhetoric of his campaign. Though the moment is likely fleeting, I’m enjoying this for what it is, a moment where John McCain was able to step away for a second and be himself.
