It’s been a rough two weeks
First Bernie Mac passed away on August 9th. Tragic and unexpected, though he had been battling health problems for a while. But then Issac Hayes died a day later, on August 10th. And that was a shock to pretty much everyone. A one-two punch, to be sure.
After a little over a week of mourning, LeRoi Moore, the gentle giant of a saxophonist for Dave Matthews Band, passed on due to recurring complications stemming from an auto accident. That same day, character actor Julius Carry, who I remember best as Lord Bowler from The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr., died of pancreatic cancer. Damn. Thanks a lot, fate. Any more respected black men you want to claim? Apparently that answer would be a yes, as Gene Upshaw, longtime head of the National Football League Players’ Association, passed away a day later, on August 20th. Also from pancreatic cancer.
Seriously, what’s going on? That’s about all the coincidence I can take.
