Superman is the Shizzzit
This is one of my favorite Superman pages of all time. And easily one of the best series of panels to come out of any comic story, ever.
I recently rediscovered it the other night as I was going through some old comics. Hidden in my bookcase, I came across a trade paperback of Alan Moore’s DC Comics stories that I forgot I had. It’s full of good shit… but the best one in the collection, by far, is the opening story from Superman Annual #11.
It’s titled “For the Man Who Has Everything” and teams up Alan Moore with his Watchmen partner Dave Gibbons. In doing a little research for this post, I was surprised to find that this story was published in 1985, a year or so before any issues of The Watchmen. But anyone who’s read that legendary book (and I’m pleased that the recent movie has inspired many to pick it up) should be able to notice the influence. Moore and Gibbons took superheros to some disturbing places with Watchmen, one of the many reasons it was such a revolution, and you can see that mindset on display all throughout the story.
Superman usually isn’t straight up badass, it’s not his character. But the buildup to this point in the story is perfectly executed. And the payoff, as you can see above, is legendary.
