7 Things I Learned From My First Time at the Sundance Film Festival

Big thanks to the good people over at Moviefone for putting up this blog post of mine. Here’s an excerpt:

If you asked me a month or two ago where the Sundance Film Festival was held, I probably would have guessed somewhere in Colorado instead of where it’s actually held: Park City, Utah. Don’t get me wrong, I knew plenty about the festival and its pedigree. I just thought it was held in that ski town from ‘Dumb and Dumber.’

In other words, I possessed zero notion that I’d ever actually get a chance to go, much less have any idea what it would actually be like. Hollywood moves fast, though, and before I knew it the 8-bit animated music video that my girlfriend worked on was in the festival and we had tickets…

Secrets of the Magus

I discovered Ricky Jay — unquestionably one of the coolest dudes on the planet — in the pages of the New Yorker in 1993. My mom was a subscriber and the magazine had arrived every week for as long as I could remember. I often tried to read it, but I remember each issue was a muddle of complicated words and prose in-between the only thing I could really grasp at that agecat cartoons.

One day I picked up a random issue and before I knew it, I found myself knee deep in this amazing profile of Ricky Jay, titled ”Secrets of the Magus.” Jay’s intense, bearded stare beckoned me into the unknown and I just started reading. I may have understood about half of the words and it may have taken half a day to get through it, but I was mesmerized. I’ve had a deck of cards in my backpack ever since.

If you’ve ever wanted to see someone cut a pencil in half with a playing card, do yourself a favor and search YouTube for some of his videos. If he decides to revive his one-man show “Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants,” I will definitely be on top of getting tickets to see it. Or just figure out how to con my way in. I think he would appreciate that.

On the left is John the Wolfking of LA — a solo album by John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, released in 1970. When I stumbled across it, the cover jumped out at me, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it… then it hit me. Dylan! I was immediately interested after I realized that.
On the right is Bob Dylan’s Desire — an album I’ve loved for a long time, but had no idea that the cover was an homage. Well, I just love that kind of thing and had to download Wolfking. As it turns out, the album is fantastic… the best kind of combination of Gram Parsons and John Cale. Take a listen.

Happy that if you Google the word “Beck,” the artist comes before the blowhard. For that matter, so does the Mongolian Chop Squad… whatever that is.

“Beer is proof that God wants us to be happy.” — Benjamin Franklin
The past couple of years a good friend of mine has made it a birthday tradition of his to hit up The Patriot for beer and sliders. For some reason, I was compelled to Photoshop this as a response to his e-mail invitation this year. And I’m glad I did.
Now the Internet has a proper picture of Ben Franklin hoisting a beer glass.
